Scottish Canals is gearing up for a big year of celebrations as 2022 marks the 200th anniversaries of the Union and Caledonian canals opening.
To celebrate our history and the valuable contributions our canals make to Scotland and the world, we’re working with Scottish Waterways for All, local authorities, community groups, economic development bodies and tourism partners to plan an exciting calendar of activities including; flotillas, festivals and canal challenges to take place across the year.
Once the transport arteries that stoked the fires of the industrial revolution, today Scotland’s canals are home to cyclists and residential boaters rather than coal scows and Clydesdale horses. Passing through some of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes and the bustling cities of Edinburgh and Inverness, our 200-year-old waterways continue to contribute to Scotland’s rich heritage whilst providing corridors of opportunity for the future.
We’re inviting partners, volunteers, boaters, customers and community groups, as well as the wider Scottish public, to share in our 200th anniversary celebrations.
Whether you are looking to host an event on the Union or Caledonian canal, are planning to set yourself a personal goal like walking the Great Glen Way or paddling the length of the Union Canal, or would like to delve more into the stories, maps and blueprints behind these magnificent structures there will be an opportunity for you to get involved.
We will be updating our website with more information on our 200th anniversary plans as they unfold so please check it regularly and follow us @ScottishCanals for all the latest news.
If you have an idea you would like to explore with us please email us at communications@scottishcanals.co.uk we’d love to hear from you.
